Gearhart Mountain Wilderness

Gearhart Mountain Wilderness is a designated federal wilderness area in south-central Oregon, lying within the Fremont-Winema National Forest and spanning the border between Lake and Klamath counties. Established as a Wild Area in 1943 and later redesignated under the Wilderness Act of 1964, the area preserves roughly 22,823 acres of the dry, mountain landscape that characterizes Oregon's desert-to-coastal transition zone. The wilderness is anchored by Gearhart Mountain, the highest point in the unit at 8,364 feet. Its terrain blends high mountain meadows, glacially carved cirques, and forested ridges, while its vegetation ranges from white fir and ponderosa pine at lower elevations to pure stands of lodgepole and whitebark pine higher up. Wildlife such as deer, elk, black bear, and mountain lion share the area with a rich variety of forest birds and cold-water trout in the headwater streams. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service entirely within the Bly Ranger District, Gearhart Mountain Wilderness offers a remote, lightly developed landscape for hiking, horseback riding, hunting, fishing, and wildlife observation. The wilderness stands out as one of Oregon's older designated wild landscapes and remains an important refuge for the dry pine forests and meadow communities typical of the broader southern Cascades fringe.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
