A small, surviving fragment of North Rhine-Westphalia's once extensive lowland heath, now a refuge for juniper, marsh gentian, and lapwings.

Hüttruper Heide

The Hüttruper Heide is a small nature reserve in the Münsterland region of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, preserving a surviving remnant of a heathland that was once far more extensive. Located in the Greven district of Hüttrup, the protected area preserves both a juniper-dominated dry heath remnant and a wet, molinia-rich depression, offering a compact but ecologically valuable piece of the regional heathland character. Most of the surrounding historic heath was reclaimed for agriculture or planted with forest during the twentieth century, leaving only a few hectares of the original landscape intact. The reserve is significant because it represents one of the last unprotected, or at least once unprotected, refugia for characteristic heath plants such as juniper and the rare marsh gentian, as well as for breeding birds that have otherwise largely vanished from the area. The reserve sits near the Münster-Osnabrück Airport and the surrounding Airportpark business development, and its continued existence illustrates the tension between infrastructure expansion and small but ecologically meaningful protected sites in western Germany. Although tiny, the area remains scientifically and conservation-relevant as a documented stronghold of several threatened plant species in Kreis Steinfurt.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
