Kiesgrube Wahn

Kiesgrube Wahn is a small nature reserve (Naturschutzgebiet) located in the Porz district of Cologne, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It lies within the broader landscape of the Bergische Heideterrasse, a terrace of sandy and gravelly terrain that has produced a distinctive regional pattern of heath, wetland, and woodland transitions. The site was established in 1988 on land that had previously been excavated for Quaternary sands and gravels. After the extraction operations ended, the exposed pit floor and pit edges were allowed to develop into a mosaic of open water, raw pioneer soils, dry and moist open ground, and willow-dominated mixed woodland. The reserve covers a compact area and is recognized for the unusually high ecological value it delivers despite its small footprint. Today Kiesgrube Wahn is valued primarily for its wetland and waterbird habitats, its pioneer plant communities, and its role as a refuge for several rare and Red List species of birds, bats, amphibians, insects, and mollusks. It forms one piece of a larger network of former gravel-pit habitats around Cologne that together contribute to regional biodiversity conservation.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
