Kiesgruben Paulsmaar

Kiesgruben Paulsmaar is a small nature reserve situated in the outskirts of Cologne, Germany, close to the border between the city and the neighboring municipalities of Troisdorf and Niederkassel in the Lower Rhine region. Covering roughly 24 hectares, the protected area is built on a former gravel extraction site that has been transformed into a mosaic of open water, wetland margins, meadow, scrub, and plantation woodland. The reserve is anchored by three interconnected water bodies, the largest of which dominates the eastern side of the site and is leased to a local angling club, while a smaller, newer western lake is kept entirely free of fish for conservation. Around these lakes a narrow belt of silver willow floodplain forest, reedbeds, white water-lily stands, willow and alder carr, and species-rich dry grassland creates a compact refuge for waterbirds, amphibians, and dragonflies within an otherwise heavily developed urban fringe landscape between Cologne and the Rhine floodplain. Although modest in size, the protected area plays a regional role as a resting, feeding, and breeding habitat for waterbirds following the Rhine corridor, and as one of several scattered gravel pit reserves that together form a network of aquatic refuges in the Cologne area. Its combination of post-industrial origin, carefully managed angling use, and active ecological recovery from succession makes it a representative example of small-scale, urban-edge habitat restoration in western Germany.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
