Lahemaa National Park is Estonia's first and largest national park, established in 1971 as the inaugural protected area of the former Soviet Union. Located in northern Estonia, approximately 70 kilometers east of the capital Tallinn, the park stretches along the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland and encompasses a remarkable diversity of landscapes including four prominent peninsulas—Juminda, Pärispea, Käsmu, and Vergi—separated by four distinct bays. The name Lahemaa translates from Estonian as "Land of Bays," accurately reflecting the region's deeply indented coastline stretching about 145 kilometers within the park boundaries. With an area of 747 square kilometers, including roughly 275 square kilometers of marine waters, it ranks among the largest national parks in Europe and serves as a flagship for Baltic conservation.
