A remote Marshallese coral atoll with deep lagoons and layered colonial heritage.

Likiep Atoll

Likiep Atoll is a coral atoll of 65 islands in the Pacific Ocean, forming a legislative district of the Ratak Chain of the Marshall Islands. It lies approximately 55 kilometers northwest of Wotje and is home to a small Marshallese population distributed across its slender ring of islets. Although its total land area is small, the atoll encloses one of the larger central lagoons in the Ratak Chain, giving it a striking contrast between narrow land strips and a vast enclosed sea. The atoll stands out within the Marshall Islands for the unusual depth of its colonial and maritime history. It was charted by Spanish expeditions in the sixteenth century, later became a privately owned copra plantation under a Portuguese trader, passed through German and Japanese administrative control in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and finally emerged as part of the independent Marshall Islands in 1986. Remnants of these successive eras, including a Spanish wharf, a German plantation house, and a Japanese community center, remain visible across the atoll today. Likiep is also notable as the location of the Marshall Islands' highest natural point, an unnamed knoll that rises just above the surrounding sea level. Combined with its lagoon size, its heritage architecture, and its position along the Ratak Chain, the atoll offers a distinctive blend of marine geography and cultural layering unusual for such a small landmass.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
