Markermeer & IJmeer

Markermeer & IJmeer is a Dutch Natura 2000 site formed by two adjoining freshwater lake basins in the central Netherlands, the broad Markermeer to the east and the smaller IJmeer that reaches toward Amsterdam. Together they represent one of the largest enclosed lake areas in the country, sitting between the polders of Flevoland and the historic shoreline of North Holland. The site is protected under both the European Habitats Directive and the Birds Directive, reflecting the importance of its shallow waters, dike-fringed shores, and newly created wetland islands for waterbirds and aquatic habitat. It lies in a landscape shaped by the Zuiderzee Works, where centuries of Dutch water engineering transformed an inland sea into a managed mosaic of polders and lakes. Although closely linked with neighboring Natura 2000 areas such as the IJsselmeer, Lepelaarplassen, Oostvaardersplassen, and Polder Zeevang, the Markermeer & IJmeer site stands on its own as a distinct ecological entity, bounded by dams, dikes, and roads rather than by natural shorelines.
