Monte Prinzera Nature Reserve

Monte Prinzera is a small but geologically extraordinary mountain in the northern Apennines, in the province of Parma, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Rising to 736 meters above sea level, it represents the only protected outcrop of ophiolites in the entire region: fragments of ancient oceanic crust composed mainly of peridotite and serpentinite, with occasional basalt. These ultrabasic rocks, rich in iron and magnesium and poor in silica, give the mountain its striking rust-red color and stand out sharply against the gentler clay hills of the surrounding countryside. Since 1990, the slopes and summit of Monte Prinzera have been protected as a nature reserve, recognized for their rare spontaneous flora and unusual geology. The mountain is crossed by a section of the historic Via Francigena pilgrimage route between Bardone and Terenzo, and is visible from the winding turns of the Strada Statale 62 della Cisa near the locality of Piantonia, where a television repeater dominates the summit silhouette. The reserve is also ecologically significant, hosting a varied community of bats, woodland birds, and expanding populations of larger mammals such as the crested porcupine and the wolf. Its combination of geological singularity, Mediterranean-type dry habitats, and mixed deciduous woodland makes Monte Prinzera a distinctive protected area within the otherwise agricultural Apennine foothills of Emilia.
