A wildlife-struggling protected area in Zambia's Northern Province guarding one of Africa's rarest thicket ecosystems

Mweru Wantipa National Park

Mweru Wantipa National Park is a protected area in the Northern Province of Zambia, named after Lake Mweru Wantipa, a large shallow lake nestled within the park's boundaries. The park sits in the Central Zambezian Miombo woodlands ecoregion, a vast tract of southern African savanna characterized by miombo woodland dominated by Brachystegia trees. However, the park is most distinctive for containing a rare and endangered vegetation type known as Itigi-Sumbu thicket, an almost impenetrable bush consisting of approximately a hundred plant species woven together so densely that traversal is virtually impossible. This thicket is known from only one other location in central Tanzania, making the Mweru-Wantipa area globally significant for this unique habitat. Once teeming with wildlife including lion, elephant, and black rhinoceros, the park has suffered severe wildlife depletion due to decades of inadequate management and protection, representing a cautionary tale of conservation failure in Africa's protected landscapes.
