A small, unusually rich urban-edge nature reserve on the southeastern edge of Hradec Králové

Na Plachtě

Na Plachtě is a small protected nature reserve on the southeastern outskirts of Hradec Králové in eastern Bohemia, Czechia. Created in late 2013 from the merger of two earlier monuments, it covers roughly 39 hectares of ponds, peat meadows, periodic pools, marshland, and exposed sandy patches. Together with its adjacent unit, Na Plachtě 3, it forms a Natura 2000 Site of Community Importance, recognized for its exceptionally high biodiversity tucked between the city and the Hradec Králové municipal forests. The reserve's identity is built on a striking contrast: a sand-mining hollow and abandoned military training ground that, over decades, has been reclaimed by wetland and meadow habitats. Surveys have recorded more than 3,500 species of plants and animals on-site, including over 100 legally protected ones, and several species that, within the Czech Republic, depend almost entirely on the Plachtě wetlands for their survival. The reserve is also a working conservation landscape. Volunteers and NGOs help manage it, water buffalo and Exmoor ponies have been used as grazing animals to keep meadows open, and ongoing restoration work targets decades-old illegal waste deposits hidden within the site.

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.
