Naturpark Beverin
Naturpark Beverin is a regional nature park of national importance in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, organized around the prominent 2998 m peak of Piz Beverin. Designated under Swiss federal guidelines in 2013, the park covers about 515 square kilometers across nine alpine municipalities of the eastern Central Alps. The park's identity rests on the meeting of contrasting alpine landscapes: high mountain ridges, mountain lakes and peatlands, dry and humid forest valleys, river gorges, and centuries-old cultural landscapes shaped by pastoral use. Three major gorges carve through the area, while the Splügen and San Bernardino passes have carried north-south traffic through the Alps since antiquity. Culturally, the park is shaped by two distinct settlement traditions, Romanesque villages in the Val Schons and the dispersed Walser hamlets of the Rheinwald, Tschappina and Safiental valleys. Its emblem is the Alpine ibex, reintroduced in 1954 and now thriving in one of the oldest protected hunting reserves in the canton.
