Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary

Newhaven Wildlife Sanctuary is a large protected nature reserve in the Northern Territory of Australia, located roughly 300 to 400 kilometres north-west of Alice Springs. Covering more than 2,600 square kilometres of the Tanami and Great Sandy Desert transition, it preserves a striking mosaic of parallel dunes, salt lakes, claypans, rocky hills, and sweeping arid plains. Once a working pastoral lease, the property was purchased in 2000 and transformed into a conservation reserve, now jointly managed by the Australian Wildlife Conservancy and Birds Australia. The sanctuary is recognised as a refuge for a remarkable suite of threatened and range-restricted species, many of which have declined elsewhere in central Australia. Its diverse vegetation communities, ranging from grasslands and woodlands to shrublands, support over 600 recorded plant species and a rich desert fauna, from the elusive night parrot to the greater bilby and great desert skink. Newhaven stands out for combining Indigenous land stewardship with landscape-scale conservation. A massive cat-proof fence completed in 2018 created one of the largest predator-free conservation areas in the world, while collaborative programs with Aboriginal ranger teams and traditional owners continue to reintroduce locally extinct species to the region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
