Nidderauen von Stockheim

Nidderauen von Stockheim is a protected nature reserve in Hesse, Germany, situated along both banks of the Nidder river in the Wetteraukreis district. Designated in 1981, the reserve covers around 51 hectares of floodplain landscape within the municipal areas of Glauburg (Stockheim) and Ortenberg (Effolderbach). Together with the neighboring Auwiesen von Effolderbach and the Salzwiesen von Selters, it forms part of the larger Auenverbund Wetterau, a connected network of floodplain habitats that together exceed 250 hectares. The reserve's purpose is to conserve wet meadows, reedbeds, tall herb vegetation, and traditionally managed farmland in the Nidder valley. These habitats serve as breeding, resting, feeding, and wintering grounds for a wide range of threatened wetland-dependent species, alongside protecting endangered plant communities. Open water surfaces and a well-developed network of paths make the area accessible and well suited to nature observation, while its simultaneous designation as an EU Fauna-Flora-Habitat (FFH) site underscores its broader European conservation value. Nidderauen von Stockheim is especially recognized for its rich birdlife, including threatened breeding species such as bluethroat, sedge warbler, spotted crake, water rail, kingfisher, marsh harrier, and little grebe, as well as its importance for amphibians like the European tree frog. Conservation management since 2005 has restored sections of the Nidder itself, and since 2011 the area has been grazed by Heck cattle and Konik horses to maintain its open wetland character.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
