Nosivolo River

The Nosivolo River is a significant watercourse in eastern Madagascar and a primary tributary of the Mangoro River. Rising east of the highland town of Fandriana, it flows through densely forested terrain before descending toward the Mangoro, with the town of Marolambo sitting along its banks near the junction with the Sandranamby tributary. The river has gained regional and international recognition because of its freshwater biodiversity, particularly its native cichlids and the Malagasy rainbowfish, several of which exist nowhere else. In 2010, the Nosivolo and its tributaries were designated as Madagascar's first river Ramsar site, formally acknowledging the wetland's ecological importance at a global level. Today the Nosivolo stands as a small but symbolically important example of inland freshwater protection on the island, connecting highland source forests with the larger Mangoro watershed. Its recognition helped pave the way for greater attention to Madagascar's often-overlooked river ecosystems.
