Forested lake highlands on Helsinki’s doorstep
Nuuksio National Park
Nuuksio National Park is one of Finland’s forty national parks, situated in the Uusimaa region across the municipalities of Espoo, Kirkkonummi, and Vihti. Established in 1994, the park encompasses approximately 53 square kilometers of forested landscapes and lake basins, representing the westernmost extension of the Nuuksio Lake Upland. Located less than 30 kilometers northwest of central Helsinki, it is the second-closest national park to the Finnish capital after the more recently established Sipoonkorpi National Park. The park’s landscape is characterized by glacial valleys, rugged rocky hills covered in lichen and sparse pine forest, interconnected lakes, and patches of old-growth woodland, bogs, and heritage meadows. Its proximity to the Helsinki metropolitan area makes it a heavily visited recreation space while maintaining significant ecological value as a near-natural green corridor.
