Piedras Blancas National Park

Piedras Blancas National Park is a protected rainforest area in southern Costa Rica, situated in Puntarenas Province near the small community of La Gamba. The park encompasses rugged mountain terrain and watersheds draining into the Golfo Dulce, a unique tropical gulf on the Pacific coast. Established in 1991 as part of Corcovado National Park, it became an independent protected area in 1999 and now forms a critical component of the Osa Conservation Area. The park protects dense evergreen forest that blanket the Esquinas and Piedras Blancas river basins, preserving rare tropical tree species and providing habitat for remarkable biodiversity including jaguars, ocelots, pumas, and more than 90 mammal species documented through camera trap studies. Until the mid-1990s, much of the forest faced severe threat from logging, but concerted conservation efforts have expanded protected territory to more than 80 percent of the park's total area through land purchases by governmental and NGO partners.
