Plumas National Forest

Plumas National Forest is a large United States national forest located in northern California, sitting at the northern end of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Named after the Feather River, historically called Rio de las Plumas, the forest covers roughly 1.1 million acres of rugged mountain terrain that extends across several counties in northeastern California. The forest's landscape blends deep canyons, forested ridges, high-elevation lakes, and the headwaters of the Feather River system. It supports one of the largest identified blocks of old-growth conifer forest in the Sierra Nevada, recognized by the Old-Growth Forest Network. Established in the early twentieth century from an earlier forest reserve, Plumas remains an important landscape for conservation, recreation, watershed protection, and the long-running Sierra Nevada timber industry. Beyond its ecological role, Plumas National Forest is a recreational and regional landmark. It surrounds the small mountain community of Quincy and is divided into three ranger districts, each anchoring a different gateway into the forest's wilderness areas, reservoirs, and historic Sierra landscapes.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
