Red Deer Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The Red Deer Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a federally designated bird sanctuary located within the city of Red Deer in central Alberta, Canada. Established in 1924, it is one of the older migratory bird sanctuaries in the Canadian system and falls within the Aspen Parkland ecoregion, a transitional zone between prairie grasslands and northern forest. The sanctuary centers on the Gaetz Lakes, two former oxbow channels of the nearby Red Deer River, and supports a mix of wetland, shrub, forest, and small patches of open land that together form valuable breeding and stopover habitat for waterfowl and other birds. Although compact at roughly 130 hectares and situated right inside a city, the sanctuary plays an important role for nesting ducks, geese, and visiting waterbirds. Its combination of standing water, marsh edges, and aspen-bordered uplands makes it unusually productive for birdlife in a region where much of the original wetland and parkland habitat has been altered by agriculture and urban growth. Managed by the Canadian Wildlife Service, it remains a significant protected natural area within Alberta's otherwise heavily modified central landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
