Manglares El Morro Wildlife Refuge

Manglares El Morro is a coastal wildlife refuge in southwestern Ecuador that protects one of the country's most important mangrove ecosystems. Located in the Guayas Province and administered through Fundación Natura, the refuge lies at the mouth of the Gulf of Guayaquil, where Pacific Ocean currents directly shape the local climate and ecological conditions. The refuge preserves an extensive belt of mangrove forest crossed by tidal estuaries and natural channels, along with emerging islands and rocky formations known as farallones. Its position at the threshold of the Gulf of Guayaquil gives it an ecological character that differs from interior protected areas, making it a key marine and coastal habitat within Ecuador's National System of Protected Areas. Established in September 2007, the refuge is recognized for nesting seabirds, seasonal marine mammals such as sea lions, resident bottlenose dolphins, and migrating sea turtles. Beyond its ecological role, Manglares El Morro has become an important center for community-based ecotourism, drawing thousands of visitors each year from nearby towns such as Puerto El Morro, Posorja, and Isla Puná.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
