Reserva Marina El Pelado

Reserva Marina El Pelado is an Ecuadorian marine protected area situated along the southern coast of the Santa Elena Province, where the warm, low-salinity waters of the Panama Baya meet the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Humboldt Current at the so-called equatorial front of the Tropical Eastern Pacific. The reserve combines an offshore rocky reef system of thirteen submarine shoals with patch corals and the small rocky islet of El Pelado, two mangrove zones, and the coastal communities of Palmar, Ayangue, San Pedro, and Valdivia. The reserve was created in 2012 and is administered by Ecuador's Ministry of the Environment. Its marine environment is shaped by a fluctuating oceanographic setting that mixes warm and cold water organisms, supporting diverse sponges, cnidarians, echinoderms, and reef fishes. The islet hosts nesting seabirds and a sea lion colony, while the surrounding waters are important for snorkeling, recreational diving, and seasonal whale watching.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
