Réserve naturelle régionale géologique de Pontlevoy

The Réserve naturelle régionale géologique de Pontlevoy is a small regional nature reserve in the Centre-Val de Loire region of central France, located on the northern edge of the commune of Pontlevoy in the Loir-et-Cher department. Covering just under two hectares, it is one of the smallest designated natural reserves in France and ranks among the very smallest in scale nationwide. Despite its modest size, the reserve holds significant geological and paleontological value. It preserves an abandoned quarry cut into the Beauce limestone, where the bedrock is locally overlaid by faluns, a distinctive type of marine sediment. These deposits preserve a rich fossil record from a shallow, warm sea of the Middle Miocene, around 14 to 16 million years ago. The site is now managed as an educational outlet for geology, paleontology, and the earth sciences. Interpretive panels and guided visits allow visitors to examine the stratigraphy directly in the exposed quarry face, making the reserve a compact but informative window into the ancient marine environments that once covered what is now the Loire Valley.

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.
