Mazury Nature Reserve

Mazury Nature Reserve is a landscape reserve (rezerwat krajobrazowy) located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship in northeastern Poland, within the Olecko County and the gmina of Kowale Oleckie. It lies in the Ełk Lake District, one of the characteristic mesoregions of the broader Masurian Lake District, and covers roughly 388 hectares of forested terrain stretching between the lakes Szwałk Wielki, Piłwąg, and Łaźno. The reserve protects a representative water-and-forest landscape typical of the nearby Borecka Forest (Puszcza Borecka), including the eastern portion of Lake Piłwąg with its three forested islands. Beyond its scenic interest, it safeguards well-developed Mazurian variants of mixed deciduous forests, with mature tree stands that illustrate the region's classic woodland character. Established in 1981 under an order of the Minister of Forestry and the Wood Industry, the reserve was created specifically to preserve the landscape qualities of this lake-and-forest mosaic. It remains an example of the traditional Masurian landscape, where lakes, islands, and richly structured broadleaf and mixed forests come together within a single protected area.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
