Roaring River Wilderness

Roaring River Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area in the Mount Hood National Forest in Clackamas County, Oregon. Covering about 36,500 acres on the southwestern flanks of the Mount Hood region of the Cascade Range, the area was added to the National Wilderness Preservation System in 2009 as part of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act. The wilderness is named for the Roaring River, a tributary of the Clackamas River that threads through the heart of the area. Its terrain combines rugged forested ridges, clear subalpine lakes, and open alpine meadows, supporting old-growth stands estimated to be roughly a thousand years old. Together with the adjacent Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness, it forms a significant block of protected Cascade habitat within easy reach of the Portland metropolitan region. Although smaller than many of Oregon's well-known wilderness areas, Roaring River stands out for its combination of ancient forest, high-country lakes, and a wild river corridor that remains important for native salmon. Its proximity to Mount Hood, one of the state's most recognizable landmarks, also gives it a strong sense of place within the broader Cascade landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
