A Volga-bending national park protecting Zhiguli mountains, stone steppes, and ancient forests in Samara Oblast.
Samarskaya Luka National Park
Samarskaya Luka National Park is a protected natural area centered on the great horseshoe bend of the Volga River in Samara Oblast of Russia, a region more widely known as the Samara Bend or the Zhiguli. The park preserves the northern flank of this distinctive geological formation, where the Zhiguli Mountains rise above the river and the landscape transitions from steep rocky hills into forested highlands, rolling ravine terrain, and broad Volga floodplains. The protected area combines karst uplands, broadleaf and mixed forests, relict stone steppes on southern limestone slopes, and Volga shoreline habitats. Established in 1984, it includes notable Zhiguli summits, the Volga floodplain, and a system of forested and steppe ecosystems of considerable ecological importance. The park works together with the neighboring Zhiguli State Reserve as part of the Middle Volga Complex Biosphere Reserve under UNESCO. Samarskaya Luka is widely recognized for the meeting of forest, steppe, and mountain ecosystems within a relatively compact area, and for the cultural-historical significance of its villages, caves, and legends associated with figures such as Stepan Razin, Yermak, and Pugachev. Its combination of rugged scenery, biodiversity, and human heritage makes it one of the most striking protected landscapes along the Volga.
