Scent Grass Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary

Scent Grass Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a small but ecologically focused waterfowl sanctuary in the western part of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It sits within the Aspen Parkland ecoregion, a transitional landscape where northern boreal forest meets southern prairie, and consists largely of open water bordered by sedge marsh. The lake and its surrounding wetlands provide habitat for breeding ducks, molting waterfowl, and large seasonal gatherings of geese and other migratory birds. The sanctuary was established in 1948 to replace earlier bird sanctuaries in Saskatchewan that had become unsuitable because of prolonged drought. Its location near the existing Moore Lake colony makes it especially important as a shared breeding and molting ground for ducks in the Aspen Parkland zone. Today it is managed by the Canadian Wildlife Service as part of the national network of migratory bird sanctuaries, helping to protect one of the few reliable wetland habitats in an otherwise largely agricultural prairie region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
