Schwalm-Nette-Platte mit Grenzwald und Meinweg

Schwalm-Nette-Platte mit Grenzwald und Meinweg is a European bird protection area (EU Special Protection Area, SPA) in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Covering roughly 77 square kilometers across five separate sub-areas, the site lies mainly along the German-Dutch border in Mönchengladbach and the districts of Heinsberg, Kleve, and Viersen. The protection area is described as a unique complex of still waters, open pine and oak mixed forests, heath moors and dry heaths, near-natural streams, bog, swamp, riparian and floodplain woodlands, and beech-oak mixed forests. This mosaic of habitat types in the Lower Rhine lowlands makes the site exceptionally important for breeding, resting, and migrating birds, and gives it a strong regional and state-level significance. Designated under the European Birds Directive, the area hosts outstanding breeding populations of bluethroat, woodlark, teal, common stonechat, and little grebe, among many others. Beyond its bird-focused mission, the site also embodies the broader habitat mosaic of the Lower Rhine landscape, combining large tracts of plantation forest with wetland remnants, dry heaths, and floodplain features.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
