Stotts Island Nature Reserve

Stotts Island Nature Reserve protects a 1.41 square kilometre stretch of river island in the lower Tweed River, in the Northern Rivers region of far northeastern New South Wales, Australia. The reserve lies near Tweed Heads at the border with Queensland and a short distance upstream from Murwillumbah, placing it at the climatic meeting point of warm temperate and subtropical influences characteristic of the region. At the heart of the reserve is one of the largest remaining stands of lowland subtropical rainforest in the area, a vegetation type that has been heavily cleared across the surrounding coastal lowlands for sugar cane, dairying, sand mining and housing. The island's mixed geology of layered alluvial deposits, its ongoing reshaping by flooding and erosion, and its location within a broader riverine landscape give the reserve both its ecological character and its vulnerability. The site is most significant for its conservation value: it holds an intact block of tall, structurally complex rainforest supporting a community of characteristic tree species, and it is recognised as critical habitat for the endangered Mitchell's rainforest snail. Established in 1971 and managed as a strict nature reserve, it functions primarily as a refuge for a habitat that has largely vanished elsewhere in the Tweed valley.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
