Valle del Lunarejo

Valle del Lunarejo is a protected landscape in northern Uruguay, located in the northwest of the department of Rivera, near the borders with Artigas and Salto. Designated as a Paisaje Protegido (Protected Landscape) and incorporated into Uruguay's National System of Protected Areas (SNAP) in 2009, it centers on a deeply incised valley drained by the Arroyo Lunarejo and its many tributaries, framed by the basaltic ridges of the Cuchilla de Haedo and the Cuchilla de la Venta Quemada. The landscape combines hills rising above 350 meters, numerous waterfalls and cascades, native woodlands, and open grasslands, producing two distinct microclimates within a relatively small area. This mosaic of habitats supports more than 150 recorded bird species, a variety of amphibians, reptiles, and mammals, and a vegetation pattern that includes both subtropical forest elements and rocky outcrop specialists. Valle del Lunarejo stands out as one of Uruguay's most ecologically diverse inland protected areas and a key site for understanding the country's northern natural heritage.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
