Weerribben-Wieden National Park

Weerribben-Wieden National Park is a Dutch national park located in the Overijssel province, spanning the municipalities of Steenwijkerland and Zwartewaterland. The park encompasses the largest continuous lowland peat bog in Northwestern Europe, comprising two distinct areas known as De Weerribben and De Wieden. Established in 1992 as De Weerribben and expanded in 2009 to include De Wieden, the park covers approximately 105 square kilometers of wetlands, lakes, reed beds, and marsh forests. The landscape is characterized by a complex mosaic of waterways, peat extraction pools, reed marshes, meadows, and successional stages from open water to carr woodland. This unique hydrological and ecological system has developed over centuries of human interaction with the landscape through peat extraction and reed harvesting, creating exceptional biodiversity and conservation value.
