Wellers Bay National Wildlife Area

Wellers Bay National Wildlife Area is a small Canadian protected area situated on the northern shore of Lake Ontario in southeastern Ontario. It lies within Prince Edward County, south of the city of Trenton, and protects a remarkably compact mosaic of shoreline, barrier beach, islands, and coastal woodland. The area was established to safeguard one of the last remaining wild littoral barrier systems on the Canadian side of Lake Ontario, a type of shoreline that has otherwise been heavily altered by development, cottage construction, and shoreline stabilization projects. Its combination of beach, island forest, and open meadow creates an unusual range of habitats within a very small footprint. Although modest in size, the wildlife area carries significant regional conservation weight. It supports breeding songbirds on its forested islands, serves as a migratory stopover for waterfowl and other waterbirds on Lake Ontario, and provides habitat for several species at risk. Its ecological importance is therefore disproportionate to its area.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
