Postglacial lakes, boreal forests, and orchid-rich wetlands in northeastern Poland
Wigry National Park
Wigry National Park is one of the largest national parks in Poland, situated in the Podlaskie Voivodeship in the country's northeast. Created in 1989, the park spans roughly 15,000 hectares of forested, lacustrine, and agricultural land on the northern edge of the vast Augustów Forest complex. Its landscape is defined by dozens of postglacial lakes, glacial moraines, peatlands, and coniferous forests shaped by the last ice age. The park's central feature is Lake Wigry, a deeply indented, island-studded postglacial lake covering more than 2,100 hectares and reaching depths of over 70 meters. Surrounding the lake are smaller lakes including rare dystrophic forest pools known locally as suchary, sphagnum-ringed bog lakes that hold special ecological interest. The protected area combines rich aquatic ecosystems with extensive spruce and pine forests, supporting a notably diverse flora and fauna. Beyond its natural significance, Wigry National Park plays an important role in species conservation, scientific research, and regional tourism. It is especially notable for its populations of European beavers, orchid species, and breeding waterbirds, and for the Czarna Hańcza River, one of Poland's best-known kayaking routes, which flows through Lake Wigry.
