Europe's largest national park, guarding the last untouched boreal taiga of the Northern and Subpolar Urals.

Yugyd Va National Park

Yugyd Va is the largest national park in Russia and one of the largest protected areas in Europe, stretching across the Northern and Subpolar Urals in the southeastern part of the Komi Republic. Its name comes from the Komi language and means "light water," a poetic reference to the clarity of the rivers that flow through its territory. The park protects a vast and largely uninterrupted expanse of mountain and taiga landscapes in the Ural Mountains, ranging from lowland boreal forests on the Pechora plain to alpine tundra and glaciated peaks above the treeline. Its forests represent the largest remaining block of virgin taiga in the European part of Russia, untouched by industrial logging. Together with the Pechora-Ilych Nature Reserve to the south, Yugyd Va forms the core of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Virgin Komi Forests." The park is internationally recognized for both its ecological significance and the dramatic combination of pristine wilderness, highland scenery, and cold-water river systems.
