Indian Head Migratory Bird Sanctuary

The Indian Head Migratory Bird Sanctuary is a small protected bird sanctuary in the southeastern part of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan. It covers roughly 32 hectares in the Mixed Grassland ecoregion, situated a few kilometers southwest of the town of Indian Head along the Trans-Canada Highway and roughly 65 kilometers east of the provincial capital, Regina. The sanctuary was created to halt the indiscriminate hunting of migratory birds, and its setting reflects that founding purpose. Its wetlands were created by dams placed along Indian Head Creek as part of an agricultural experimental farm and tree nursery established in 1902, and the protected area covers two of the three resulting wetland basins within that nursery. Today the site functions as a modest refuge for migrating shorebirds, songbirds, and waterfowl, including Canada Geese, within a working prairie landscape shaped by a century of agricultural research and tree cultivation.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
