Allegheny National Recreation Area

The Allegheny National Recreation Area is a federally protected recreation area in northwestern Pennsylvania, situated on the broad Allegheny Plateau. It is administered by the United States Forest Service as part of the Allegheny National Forest and surrounds portions of the upper Allegheny River watershed, including the Allegheny Reservoir upstream of Kinzua Dam. The recreation area is divided into separate districts, the largest centered on the Allegheny Reservoir in the north and a smaller unit south of the city of Warren along the east bank of the Allegheny River. Together, these districts preserve large blocks of second-growth northern hardwood forest, river and reservoir shoreline, and backcountry terrain that are characteristic of Pennsylvania's northwestern highlands. It was established in 1984 through the Pennsylvania Wilderness Act and remains one of only a small number of national recreation areas in the eastern United States, offering long-distance trail corridors, dispersed outdoor recreation, and direct connections to the broader Allegheny National Forest landscape.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
