Bolivia's vast lowland sanctuary where the Chiquitano forest, the Pantanal, and the Cerrado converge

Área Natural de Manejo Integrado San Matías

The Área Natural de Manejo Integrado San Matías is one of Bolivia's largest protected areas, sprawling across the eastern lowlands of the Santa Cruz Department. It spans four provinces: Ángel Sandóval, Germán Busch, Chiquitos, and Velasco, and sits at the meeting point of three of South America's most ecologically distinct regions: the dry Chiquitano forest, the floodplains of the Bolivian Pantanal, and the savanna landscapes of the Cerrado. This convergence creates an extraordinary mosaic of wetlands, seasonally flooded grasslands, dry tropical forests, rolling hills, and ancient rocky ridges. San Matías was established in 1997 primarily to safeguard the Bolivian portion of the Pantanal, one of the most important wetland systems on the continent. Over time the protected area expanded to encompass major portions of the Chiquitano dry forest and the Sunsas mountains. Its Ramsar designation in 2001 reinforced its importance as a wetland of global significance. Today the area is recognized for its rich biodiversity, its role in balancing regional hydrology, and its coexistence with Indigenous Chiquitano and Ayoreo communities. Beyond conservation, the area also holds strong cultural significance: the land has been inhabited and shaped by traditional communities, missionaries, and extensive cattle ranching traditions for generations.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
