Biak-na-Bato National Park

Biak-na-Bato National Park is a protected landscape in central Luzon, Philippines, situated within the Sierra Madre mountain range approximately 80 kilometers northeast of Manila. The park encompasses a dramatic mountain gorge carved by the Balaong River and features more than a hundred caves of varying sizes, making it one of the most cave-dense protected areas in the country. Established in 1937 by President Manuel L. Quezon, the park derives its name from the historic Republic of Biak-na-Bato, a short-lived revolutionary government established during the Philippine struggle for independence in the late 19th century. The area holds significant historical importance as the former headquarters of revolutionary leader Emilio Aguinaldo and contains remnants of stone fortifications and observation posts from that era. The park serves as a living museum of both natural and cultural heritage, offering visitors a combination of adventure tourism, historical exploration, and ecological discovery within a relatively accessible distance from the capital.
