Biogradska Gora

Biogradska Gora is a forest and national park in central Montenegro, set within the Bjelasica mountain range between the Tara and Lim rivers. Managed from the nearby town of Kolašin, it is the most northeasterly of the country's five national parks and is recognized as a UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserve. The park is celebrated for its sweeping mountain ridges, glacial lakes, swift streams, and one of the last remaining virgin forests in Europe, an old-growth beech ecosystem surrounding the glacial Biogradsko Lake. Together, these features give Biogradska Gora a distinctive character that blends high Balkan mountain scenery with unusually dense temperate forest. Beyond its natural importance, the park holds cultural and historical weight, with traditional pastoral settlements, sacred monuments, and archaeological sites scattered across its meadows and forest edges. It is both a working landscape of seasonal grazing traditions and a protected scientific reserve of regional and European importance.
