Bosque Protector La Prosperina

Bosque Protector La Prosperina is a small but ecologically significant protected tropical dry forest reserve located in western Ecuador, within the Guayas province just west of the city of Guayaquil. It belongs to the larger equatorial dry forest system that once covered much of Ecuador's coastal lowlands, and today it stands as one of the few remaining fragments of that ecosystem in the immediate vicinity of a major urban area. The reserve covers roughly 570 hectares of terrain and is administered by the Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), whose Gustavo Galindo campus encloses the protected area. The forest is shaped by a bi-seasonal tropical climate, with a pronounced dry season lasting around six months, and is dominated by dry-forest species such as the ceibo (Ceiba trischistandra) and Cochlospermum vitifolium. Beyond its ecological role, La Prosperina is recognized as a living classroom and a community-oriented conservation space. It functions simultaneously as a research site, an environmental education hub, and a refuge for urban biodiversity surrounded by urbanizations, quarries, and roads.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
