Brabrand Sø

Brabrand Sø is a shallow freshwater lake located in the Aarhus Ådal, an east-west glacial tunnel valley on the western edge of Aarhus in central Jutland, Denmark. Once a brackish fjord connected to the Aarhus Bight after the last ice age, the basin was gradually isolated by post-glacial land uplift and sedimentation, becoming the lowland lake seen today. The lake and its surrounding meadows form a long, narrow green wedge cutting into the urban fabric of Aarhus and are connected downstream to the Aarhus Å river, which historically allowed boat passage toward the city center. The area is a regionally important bird habitat, supporting both wintering and migratory species, and is surrounded by wet meadows, reeds, and grazing pastures that host rare flora and invertebrates. Public attention to Brabrand Sø has grown alongside long-running efforts to combat nutrient pollution, restore lost wet-meadow vegetation known locally as rigkær, and safeguard groundwater that supplies drinking water to roughly 200,000 people in the Aarhus area. Today it functions simultaneously as a Natura 2000 site, a drinking-water protection area, and a popular urban nature corridor for walking, cycling, and rowing.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
