Butte Valley National Grassland

Butte Valley National Grassland is a protected National Grassland in northern California, situated in the Klamath River basin in Siskiyou County near the Oregon border. It lies between the small communities of Dorris and Macdoel along U.S. Highway 97, at roughly 4,200 feet of elevation in a landscape of flat, sandy soils and a dry lakebed framed by views of the Cascade Range and Mount Shasta. The grassland protects a piece of sagebrush steppe in a region where much of the original native rangeland has been lost to agriculture and development. Designated in 1991 as the twentieth National Grassland in the United States and the only one in California, it is administered by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Klamath National Forest. Beyond its ecological role, the area carries the layered history of homesteading, soil conservation, military training, and cattle grazing. Today it offers open habitat for birdlife and native bunch grasses, and provides an uncommon high-desert grassland experience within an otherwise mountainous part of northern California.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
