Calperum Station

Calperum Station is a large nature reserve in the eastern part of South Australia, situated on the northern side of the Murray River near the town of Renmark. Established in 1993 from former pastoral leases, the reserve covers about 2,386 square kilometers of predominantly mallee woodland growing on the east-west red-brown dunes of the Loxton-Parilla Sands, with a small but ecologically critical share of the Murray River floodplain along its southern edge. The reserve is widely recognized for its role in conserving the black-eared miner, a threatened bird species for which most of Calperum Station is listed as critical habitat. It also forms an important part of the Riverland Biosphere Reserve and contains a major portion of the Riverland Ramsar site, a wetland of international significance under the Ramsar Convention. Although it is not officially classified as an IUCN protected area, Calperum Station is managed for habitat and species conservation, scientific research, and public education. Its combination of semi-arid mallee ecosystems, Murray floodplain wetlands, and strong involvement in environmental water and ecological research makes it a distinctive conservation landscape in southern Australia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
