Cape Byron Marine Park

Cape Byron Marine Park is one of four marine parks in New South Wales, Australia, and the most recently sanctioned of the group. It lies in the state's far north, stretching roughly 37 kilometres along the coast from the Brunswick River to Lennox Head and reaching out to three nautical miles offshore, the line where state waters meet federal jurisdiction. The park covers a broad sweep of coastal and marine environments, from open ocean and sandy beaches to rocky shores and reefs, submerged pinnacles, small rocky islands, estuarine creeks, and coastal lakes. It also includes tidal reaches of the Brunswick River, along with Belongil Creek and Tallow Creek. Declared in 2002, with a zoning plan put in place in April 2006, the park sits where warm northern waters meet cooler southern currents. Of the fifteen distinct marine ecosystems identified in the broader Tweed-Moreton bioregion, the park supports ten, making it a particularly rich confluence point for marine biodiversity on Australia's east coast.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
