Celaque National Park

Celaque National Park is a protected highland area in western Honduras encompassing the nation's tallest mountain and a critical watershed system. The park covers approximately 266 square kilometres across the Lempira Department, Copán, and Ocotepeque regions, centered around Cerro Las Minas (also known as Pico Celaque), which rises to roughly 2,870 metres above sea level. This cloud forest reserve was established in 1987 following grassroots advocacy by local communities concerned about intensive logging activities. The name Celaque derives from the extinct Lenca language and is reputed to mean "box of waters," reflecting the mountain's role as a vital water source for surrounding villages. The terrain is exceptionally rugged, with approximately two-thirds of the area featuring slopes exceeding 60 degrees, creating dramatic mountain scenery and complex ecological gradients.
