Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park

Chiltern-Mt Pilot National Park is a protected area located in the Hume region of northeastern Victoria, Australia, approximately 275 kilometres northeast of Melbourne. The 21,650-hectare park was established in October 2002 through the amalgamation of the former Chiltern Box-Ironbark National Park and the Mt Pilot Multipurpose Park, both of which had been reserved under recommendations from the 1977 Land Conservation Council. The park protects one of the most intact examples of box-ironbark forest ecosystem in Victoria, a habitat type that once covered millions of hectares across the state but has been largely cleared by European settlement. The park encompasses two distinct geological sections: the lower-lying hills of the Chiltern area composed of Ordovician sedimentary rock, and the rugged granite terrain of the Mt Pilot section. This diversity of landscape and substrate supports exceptional biodiversity, with over 600 native plant species and more than 275 species of mammals, birds and reptiles recorded within the park boundaries.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
