Country Island National Wildlife Area

The Country Island National Wildlife Area is a small Canadian protected area located on the southeastern coast of Nova Scotia, near Guysborough in Guysborough County. Established in 2024, the 21-hectare reserve covers nearly all of Country Island, with the exclusion of the active lighthouse and its immediate grounds. The reserve was created specifically to safeguard one of the most important seabird nesting habitats on Canada's Atlantic coast, particularly for threatened and vulnerable colonial nesting species. The protected area concentrates on coastal island habitats, including raised cobble beaches, low grassy meadows, shrubby areas, and small pockets of coniferous woodland. These varied microhabitats support an exceptional concentration of nesting seabirds for an island of its size. The reserve is administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service and sits within a broader network of National Wildlife Areas that target habitat protection for species of conservation concern. The reserve's importance extends well beyond its modest footprint. Country Island supports a substantial share of Canada's breeding population of the endangered Roseate Tern, alongside one of the largest known Leach's Storm-Petrel colonies in the region. Its designation reflects both the ecological urgency of conserving seabird nesting islands and the growing recognition of small Atlantic islands as irreplaceable breeding refuges.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
