Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park

Cutta Cutta Caves Nature Park is a small but distinctive protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia, located about 27 kilometers south of Katherine along the Stuart Highway. The park protects a tropical limestone karst landscape that contains a network of caves, including a main cave open to the public through guided tours. Cutta Cutta is widely noted as the only tropical cave system in Australia that is regularly accessible to visitors through guided experiences. This combination of tropical setting, accessible karst formations, and proximity to a major regional hub makes the park a notable stop in the Katherine region. Beyond the show caves themselves, the surrounding tropical woodland and the broader karst system provide habitat for several rare species, giving the park value as both a geological and ecological reserve. The park holds cultural significance for the Jawoyn people, the traditional owners of the area, for whom the caves are connected to Barrac Barrac, also known as Diver Duck dreaming. Stories of creation and the stars give the caves a place in the living cultural landscape of the region. European awareness of the caves grew after a stockman documented the main chamber around 1900, and the site was gradually developed into a public attraction from the mid twentieth century onward. Today the park operates as a nature park managed by the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife Commission, balancing public access, cave conservation, and the protection of sensitive subterranean wildlife such as the ghost bat. Cutta Cutta is best understood as a focused karst and cave reserve rather than a large wilderness park. Its identity centers on the contrast between a tropical Top End climate and the unusual underground environment of limestone passages, stalactites, and stalagmites. The combination of geological interest, biological importance, and cultural meaning gives the park a layered significance that extends well beyond its relatively compact footprint.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
