Gower Conservation Park

Gower Conservation Park is a small protected area in the Australian state of South Australia, located near the locality of Tantanoola in the state's lower south east, between Adelaide and the regional city of Mount Gambier. The park protects an ecologically representative sample of the eucalypt forest that once covered much of this part of South Australia, making it a modest but ecologically meaningful reserve in a region where much of the original native vegetation has been cleared or altered. The conservation park sits on undulating consolidated calcarenite dunes overlain by sandy soils, with limestone outcrops in places. Its vegetation is dominated by an open eucalypt forest of messmate stringybark and brown stringybark, with a shrub understorey that includes austral bracken, spike wattle, grass trees and silver-leaved banksia. A distinctive stand of rough-barked manna gum and large black wattle occupies the southern end of the park. Gower Conservation Park was first proclaimed as a national park in 1971 and was reclassified as a conservation park the following year when South Australia's modern national parks and wildlife legislation came into effect. It is managed by the Department for Environment and Water and is recognised as an IUCN Category III protected area.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
