Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary

Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary is one of the United States' largest and most ecologically significant marine protected areas, covering more than three thousand square miles of ocean, nearshore, and coastal habitat off northern and central California. Encompassing waters just north and west of San Francisco Bay and extending outward toward the continental shelf, the sanctuary preserves open ocean, tidal flats, rocky intertidal zones, estuarine wetlands, subtidal reefs, and sandy beaches within a single management framework. The sanctuary lies within the California Current ecosystem, one of the world's major eastern boundary current systems, where wind-driven upwelling continually fuels extraordinary biological productivity. This nutrient-rich environment supports an exceptional concentration of marine mammals, seabirds, sharks, fish, and invertebrates, including numerous threatened and endangered species. Administratively managed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the sanctuary is part of the Golden Gate Biosphere Reserve and connects ecologically with adjacent Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary and Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary, forming a broader network of Pacific Ocean protection along the West Coast.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
