Hammerlugk

Hammerlugk is a small nature reserve in the Görlitz district of Saxony, Germany, situated between the villages of Krauschwitz and Weißkeißel in the broader landscape of the Muskauer Heide. Although it spans only about 74 hectares, it holds an unusually important role for the region because it preserves a remnant of the moor and wetland habitats that have largely been destroyed elsewhere in the Muskauer Heide by open-cast lignite mining and agricultural drainage. The reserve sits on low ground between roughly 118 and 125 metres above sea level, a flat landscape of swampy woodland, boggy meadows, mixed conifer stands, and birch and aspen communities. Its name combines a reference to the historic iron hammer mills and smelting works in the nearby Krauschwitz village of Keula with a Sorbian word, "lugk," meaning swampy meadow. Despite ongoing disturbances to its water balance, Hammerlugk remains a valuable reference site for the formerly extensive wetland ecosystems of the Upper Lusatian heath country. The area is part of the EU Habitats Directive site "Wälder und Feuchtgebiete bei Weißkeißel," linking it to neighbouring protected forests and wetlands such as the Südbereich Braunsteich and the Keulaer Tiergarten. Its combination of protected habitat status, ecological importance within a heavily altered post-mining landscape, and strong ornithological record gives it significance well beyond its modest size.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.
