Harris Sandhills National Wildlife Area

Harris Sandhills National Wildlife Area is a Canadian protected area in central Saskatchewan, located within the Rural Municipality of Harris No. 316 in the south-central portion of the province. Established on 12 March 2025, the reserve covers roughly 372 hectares of mixed-grass prairie, native sandhill terrain, and small aspen groves, in a landscape shaped by stabilized dunes and open plains. The protected area was created to preserve a representative tract of indigenous prairie and to maintain habitat for migratory birds and species at risk. Although small in area, it carries real ecological significance within the broader prairie landscape of southern Saskatchewan and forms part of Canada's National Wildlife Area system managed by the Canadian Wildlife Service. The reserve emerged from a restructured approach to prairie conservation in Canada, replacing part of the former larger Prairie National Wildlife Area with several smaller units that more directly meet contemporary protection criteria. Harris Sandhills corresponds to unit 13 of that earlier reserve and now stands as an independent, formally recognized wildlife area.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
